Hi, my name is Dr. Hans Delfo, Doctor of Chiropractic in Los Angeles, California. I want to talk a little bit about treating scoliosis in the spine of adults. Scoliosis refers to any lateral curvature of the spine. It can be structural or functional. Structural scoliosis is actually a bony malformation of the spine which causes the curvature. Functional is caused by muscle spasm, poor posture, malalignment of the spine, pressure on the joints or compensation for an injury. A doctor of chiropractic is trained to evaluate the existence and severity of scoliosis. The signs and symptoms really depend on what the severity of the angle is. Common symptoms of scoliosis are an obvious curvature of the spine, muscle spasm along the spine, decreases function, decreased range of motion and can actually impinge and affect the internal organs as well. Getting scoliosis treated is very important to restore function to the body. A doctor of chiropractic will use stretching and strengthening exercises, adjustments, therapies such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, ice or heat to remove the muscle spasm. To return the spine to as straight as possible. Things such as pilates and yoga may also help. See your doctor of chiropractic to get evaluated and to see what kind of course of treatment is right for you. It is important to get children and young adults evaluated as well because the earlier the detection the earlier treatment can begin and the better chances of the severity of the scoliosis will be reduced.
