Hello my name is Dr. Hans Delfo, doctor of chiropractic from Los Angeles, California. Today, I want to tell you a little bit about how to relieve sciatic nerve pain in the buttocks area. Sciatic pain is a very common form of low back pain. It can be characterized by pain in the low back, buttocks and may be accompanied by an electrical sensation running down the back of the leg. This can also be accompanied by weakness, nerve pain and loss of nerve function and muscle function in the area. If you are a chiropractic candidate, your chiropractor will recommend a course of treatment to alleviate the sciatic nerve pain in the buttocks area which may include adjustments to correct misalignments of the spine or pelvis, therapy such as stretching, strengthening exercises, ice or heat or ultrasound to help alleviate the pressure and spasm of the muscles. Also a posture evaluation may be performed to see how you can incorporate relieving stress off the sciatic nerve in your activities of daily living. If you are at home and you have sciatic nerve pain, here's a few things you can do to help alleviate the pain. First, rest. A lot of sciatic nerve pain is aggravated by activity. If you rest, it allows the body to heal and allows the muscles to decrease spasm which will take some pressure off the nerves. Next is ice therapy. Icing the low back or the buttocks can help reduce swelling around the nerve itself. A good rule of thumb for ice is 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, repeat this for 24 to 48 hours. Now, it's important that when you do ice therapy, to not place the ice directly on the skin. This can actually cause more soft tissue damage. Next is stretching. Stretching is really good to help reduce muscle spasm and to relax the muscle to return to its normal state. Lastly, you can strengthen the core. Simple core exercises can help strengthen, support and relieve stress from the low back. My name is Dr. Hans Delfo, and those are my recommendations for treating sciatic nerve pain in the buttocks region.
