Hi, I'm Dr. Ray Wisniewski here to talk about sciatica. What are the symptoms of sciatica? First we have to realize that the term sciatica really just means pain along or down the sciatic nerve. So it's when pain radiates from the back, from your lower back, down the spine, down the nerve of the leg going into either the back of the leg, side of the leg. Usually the sciatic nerve runs along the back of the leg and the side of the leg. Along with that you can have numbness, tingling sensation, a loss of strength, weakness within the muscles. It can radiate as far down as the, all the way to the toes. It can just go into the buttocks or the hip joint. These are all referenced as far as what sciatica actually is. It could be from a number of causes including herniated disc, impinged nerve, stenosis, muscle spasms particularly of the piriformis muscle but, which can entrap the sciatic nerve but in all cases, it always involves irritation or pressure of the sciatic nerved causing this radiating pain down the leg.
