Hi, my name is Torrey Trust. I'm the founder of Surf eCo Surf School, and today we're going to talk about how to judge ocean waves while you're surfing. So there are a variety of different waves. The first thing you want to check out is wave height. And that's measured in terms of body parts, actually, so knee high, waist high, chest high, shoulder high. Check out the surf forecast before you head out so you know what to expect. And then, when you get to the beach, the first thing you want to do is watch the waves and make sure you go out in a safe area and know which waves are breaking bigger and smaller. There's a couple different ways waves break. First they'll break straight over, which just means the entire wall of white wash, which is not fun to catch. You will catch that wave and go straight down into the water and your board will fly backwards, so you do not want to catch those kind of waves. The other kind of waves are peak waves, and those kind of waves break in one certain area and then the rest of the wave will break afterwards, so you'll notice that the entire wave doesn't break at once, and those are the waves that you want to catch. Now if you're just starting off, you want to start with what's called the white wash, or the suit, and that's where the wave is completely white. It's a lot smaller, and you'll pretty much just surf straight towards the shore. So there's the white wash, the peak wave, and the wave that breaks straight over. And once again, my name is Torrey Trust. I'm the founder of Surf eCo Surf School, and that is how to judge waves while surfing.
