Hi, I'm Dr. David Hill and today we are going to be talking about remedies for baby acne. Now babies and acne, you think about acne in teenagers. What are babies doing getting acne? But the fact is newborns will frequently develop some degree of acne. And the reason is the same as why teenagers get it. They are exposed to mother's hormones, the level of hormones during pregnancy are very high. And there are some normal hormonal effects on the baby's body. Not only do they get acne and they notice some changes in the genitalia such as discharge in girls. You may see some breast development so think of that in infants and the same reason that teenagers get acne. Usually you'll see it as fine red bumps or maybe even whiteheads or blackheads usually distributed on the face. Sometimes on the chest and back. Now, this can also look a lot like eczema but acne usually stops in those locations, eczema may spread further. Acne also doesn't tend to peel or flake where eczema does. So, if you think your baby might have acne you might want to bring him or her to see his or her doctor. Now if you do nothing at all it's going to get better, you don't have to use Strivectin or any special soap. You just do the normal skincare for the baby and as those hormones wear off the acne is going to get better no matter what. However, if you want it treated, your doctor might choose to use ketoconazole cream. Ketoconazole is actually an antifungal and I'm not sure we still know why it seems to help baby acne but there's at least one study out there that shows it may be helpful. And so a lot of pediatricians will prescribe ketoconazole cream and hope to see some results. Regardless however, your baby is going to outgrow that acne and unlike teenage acne there is not usually any scarring or long term effects. So if you'll just be patient it's going to go away but yeah it can make for some less beautiful baby pictures then you were hoping early on. Talking about how to cure baby acne, I'm Dr. David Hill
