Hi, my name is Ashley Sattler; Co-Director and Choreographer at Technique Studio Of Dance in South Hadley, Massachusetts. I'm here to break down some basic jazz dance turns. The first turn we're going to go over is the pivot turn. Basically a pivot turn is we're going to be pivoting on our feet. You're going to start, hands on your hips, feet together; first position; you're going to step forward on your right foot. Right now we can keep flat footed; we won't go on releve yet. On your right foot, make sure that when you turn, there's only one way that you can turn; you can turn to your left which is the right way or you could turn to your right which is the wrong way and you'll know 'cause your legs will turn into a pretzel if you do it the wrong way. So your feet are together, first position; step forward on your right foot; turn to your left to face the back. From here, your feet were planted and they didn't move. You're going to step forward on your right foot; keep them planted and turn to your left. So again, feet together, step forward on your right, turn to your left; don't move your feet from the position they're in to face the back; step forward on your right foot, turn to face the front, feet together. So now we can try it in releve. Step forward on your right, turn to the back, forward on your right, turn to the front, together. One more time; step forward on your right, turn to your left, forward on your right, turn to your left. No you can also add style with your hip and your arms out, turn, out, turn. The next turn I'm going to go over is the single pirouette. The preparation is tendu side in second position; then you're going to plie, bringing your right leg behind; we're going to do an outside pirouette; you're going to bring your left, your right leg in to passe and turn to your right. So you're going to turn, come down. Again, you start in first, parallel; tendu side into second position; plie in fourth; you're going to go up into, bring your right leg into passe and turn to your right; up and down. One more time, feet together; tendu side, plie in fourth, single pirouette and down. So we have our pivot turn, starting with the right foot, step, turn, step, turn, together; pivot turn and our single pirouette; tendu side, plie in fourth, single and down. Thank you for watching.
