"Hello there. My name is Stan Hyman. I'm a Licensed Psychotherapist and Relationship Coach with Aventura Stress Relief Center in Miami, Florida. Let's talk a little bit today about how to choose a marriage counselor. There are four important points I'd like to help you to process through this. The first one is in choosing a marriage counselor, clearly you want to ask friends or family if you feel comfortable, whether they have had some good experience with a marriage counselor to help them solve their conflicts. If so that's the first good step in finding a referral that might be useful to you. Secondly if you do find such a person whether it's through them or through the Internet or through ads you want to check the person's credentials, see whether or not first of all that person is licensed and secondly whether they have the experience and the know how to work with couples and if they have worked with couples in the past. The third thing you want to do is talk to this person by phone, give yourself at least, five, ten, fifteen minutes by phone to ask questions, write the questions down and understand more fully what it is the person has to say and see if there is a rapport. Because if there is a rapport, you go to the fourth step and the fourth step is go to a session. When you have a session with this person you'll get the sense of whether or not there is a rapport and you and your partner can discuss so those are the four steps in how to choose a marriage counselor."
