"Hello, I'm Dr. Robert Hernandez. I'm a Licensed Psychologist; President and Founder of La Farfalla Retreat House. Let's talk about how to recognize a bipolar disorder. First of all there are two types of bipolar disorder. There's bipolar one which means the person has presented with a manic episode. A manic episode is a person that usually, they talk very fast, they don't know how to stop talking. They're very anxious; they present with big dreams, big fantasies. They go out and do things which are very risky whether they have multiple sexual partners or they go on shopping spree; anything that would get them further into a risk situation. Also, if a person has not had a manic episode; but maybe they've had a depressive episode with what we call a hypo-manic which means, it's very similar to a manic episode, but instead of lasting one week, it lasts a minimum of four days and it doesn't disrupt their daily functioning. Either way, dealing with a person with bipolar disorder is very frustrating and it requires a lot of patience."
