"Hello, I'm Dr. Robert Hernandez. I'm a Licensed Psychologist; President and Founder of La Farfalla Retreat House. Let's talk about how to treat depression without the use of medication. The first thing that we want to rule out is physiology. We want to make sure that the person is okay physically. So I always recommend from my patients and clients to seek a full physical from a medical doctor. After that has been done, then I like to explore their surroundings; what's happening in their lives as far as their work, their family; different types of functioning and their thoughts related to that. How does a person think about what's happening with them? Then I explore areas such as their dream life or anything that comes up unconsciously during this fashion. All of these things lead to different keys and clues of what's happening with the person and their symptoms of depression. It's very important to realize that this is a process. This is something not to be taken lightly or you want to rush through it. With a licensed health professional, they can help explore what themes are coming up that's triggering the depressive symptoms."
