How to Remove a Dent From a Bumper

Video Preview

Summary: Bumpers are made of urethane plastic that has a lot of memory. Once the right pressure and mass is put behind the dent, it will pop. It may not pop out perfectly back to original shape, but the results are quite acceptable. This procedure only works on bumper dents in the corner and they have to be reasonably large. Think of it as a soccer ball with no air it and someone stepped on it. Heat the dented area to the equivalent of a very hot day in Palm Springs. Push with solid padded pressure behind dent and watch it pop. The crown and waves left over can be pressed down while warmed up like a ring manager presses on the cheeks of a prize fighter. Good luck and spend considerable time bending the tool for the right leveraged arch. An upside-down 'J' looking tool is best, however whatever works is fine as long as you can pad it.

Take rod or flat bar and bend to slide behind skin of bumper. Once you reach the dent determine how you bend to generate outward pressure when needed.

  2. Step 2

Wrap head of tool with leather, rubber, etc. fastened with duct tape.

  3. Step 3

Heat bumper from 5 to 10 inches away, feeling it with hand constantly. When very warm to the touch it is ready. Push away and watch it pop.
