"Hi, I'm Dr. Laura Grashow a license psychologist with DrGrashow.com. Okay, let's talk a little bit now about teaching children the art of anger management. First, what we want to do in children who are having repeated explosive outbursts or displaying aggressive behavior at school or home is we want to teach these children the language of emotions so they can develop effective self talk so they can guide themselves. What we want to do is teach children that there are multiple feelings. That there are labels for these feelings and that we can actually have two feelings or more simultaneously. We also want to teach them that a feeling is not just a feeling and it can come in varying ranges of intensity. So, you can feel a little mad, very mad or sort of some what medium angry. Oftentimes, what you see in children who are having difficulty with anger management is that there are certain triggers either internally in there perceptions of things or things that are in the environment and so once the trigger happens their going from zero to ten in about two seconds. What we want to do again is teach them to be self aware, aware of how angry they are, what they upset about and start talking themselves about it guiding themselves and creating a plan of action that's consistent with mild, moderate or intense anger."
