Hi, my name is Missan Edwards and my husband Doug Edwards of ETO Martial Arts and Fitness in Kennesaw, Georgia. I have in my hands a collection of bo staff. Now for a beginner martial artist interested in weapons which one do I choose to start my training. Basic rule of thumb is you don't want the staff so tall that it's more than an inch over your head because as you start doing your spinning technique you don't want it to jab and hit the ground. You want to be in control of the weapon and if the weapon is too tall then it's going to definitely mess you up. Now, this particular bo staff is about six and a half feet tall too tall for me. This one six foot little bit tall. This one would be fine for me to use and these shorter ones believe it or not are my preference. This one my favorite. It's a little bit thicker and short enough for me to do the spins without tripping up on the floor but you don't want it so short that you can't do your striking and your jabbing techniques as well. Now this particular bo staff is too big for me. I'm five foot and this is a six foot bo staff. So, if I were to do my spinning techniques be very difficult. I can do it but then I'll have to manage the weapon instead of the technique itself. Notice how every once in a while it will strike and hit the floor same thing here too tall for me. If I come in bow, notice how awkward it feels so that's the main reason. You want to make sure you are in control of the staff.
