Hello, my name is Dr. Stephen Mandy and I am a dermatologist associated with South Beach Dermatology in Miami Beach, Florida. Let's talk about skin problems related to the gastric band. Frankly, as a dermatologist, I have seen very few skin problems related to gastric band per se. But, the gastric band is analogous to any bariatric surgery to cause severe weight loss and severe weight loss can result in a variety of skin problems. Severe weight loss can result in a variety of skin problems. Severe weight loss can result in a variety of skin problems. Severe weight loss can result in a variety of skin problems. Severe weight loss could cause a malnutrition type syndrome where patients are not absorbing enough fatty acids from their diet. This can cause severe dryness and itching in the skin and needs to be treated by replacement of those oils. There also could be severe weight loss and, especially in patients who are morbidly obese, severe weight loss results in skin laxity where there are large folds of skin that are hanging. This generally is treated by removal by plastic surgery because there is no way to shrink the skin in that situation. You also could have what looks like what looks like facial atrophy or severe aging of the skin in the face if all the facial fat is lost. This can be treated by replacement of replacement injections of collagen, hieratic acid, or other facial fillers. But, other than that, I don't think beyond the perhaps the essential fatty acid deficiency or the folds of skin that I can foresee that is a big problem, because I rarely ever see a patient complain of these things, and certainly many of my patients have had bariatric surgery.
