How to Cure Mange in Dogs

"Hi I'm Dr. Bob Pane with South Kendall Animal Clinic. Let's talk a little bit about curing mange in your dog. There are many different manges, people don't realize that there is three different main manges. There is the Demodectic manges they get from their mother we think. There is Sarcoptic mange they get from other dogs or other cats and there is Cheyletiella which is very uncommon which is a mange usually on the dorsum of a dog's fur and they scratch. Usually it is dogs that are outside or in rural areas. Anyway if it's Sarcoptic mange or Cheyletiella then we use lime sulfur. We use Ivermectin, we use certain mange dips that are really pretty easy to get rid of, usually two, three, four times in a row, three or four weeks in a row and you usually get rid of it. If it is Demodectic mange it is a whole nother story because there is many treatments for that now. The most common mange we have is Demodectic mange which is red manage and it is usually given by the mother to the puppies and they can be very difficult to get rid of because if you wait too long and the hair loss is there for a long time it usually spreads throughout the body especially if it hits the feet, the inner digital areas it is very difficult to get rid of it. Anyway we use Ivermectin sometimes, we use Amitraz or Mitaban which is the product that is recommended and they have a new product called Promeris that we are using now that is exciting because we have multiple choices. Some mange treatment works for one dog, won't work for another. What mange treatment I also use I also use through Mega Fatty Acids and I use immunostimulants. I have a few here that we use holistically to help the immune system fight it off. Vitamin E is one thing I recommend as well. It seems to help the skin in these young puppies. So sometimes we also have to treat the mange with antibiotics because it affects the follicles and the follicles get infected with staff or other bacteria and we have got to get rid of the infection so your veterinarian needs to go on antibiotics and things to help get rid of them concurrently and then you have to scrape them after three or four weeks and see if you are getting the accurate results you want. So it is very important to talk to your veterinarian, find out what the best treatment for your dog is and switch if necessary."
