"Hi I'm Dr. Bob Pane with South Kendall Animal Clinic. Let's talk a little bit about talking about nausea in dogs with kidney failure. A lot of dogs will get gastritis secondary to uremia. Uremia is an increase in blood urea nitrogen products in your dog and a lot of times they get upset. What I do is put them on Pepcid Famotidine. It depends on the size of the dog, with a small dog, 5 or 10 mgs., a big dog 20 or 40 mgs. Also you put them on medications that will keep them from being nauseas like Reglan Metoclopramide we put them on to stop the nausea and the gastric vomiting reflex they get from that. I don't recommend Pepto Bismol because to me it is very nauseating. There are new products that we are excited about. There is one called Asadill that is made, just come out in the last two or three years that lowers the BUN or the Blood Urea Nitrogen products, the protein degradation products we see with kidney disease and it has helped a lot but nausea is very common, smaller meals, smaller amounts of water. If they eat too fast or drink too fast they'll vomit, anti spasmodics like Reglan, Pepcid is my favorite because it is cheap and easy to get, bland foods, we often recommend foods like MF or KD which has lower amounts of protein, they are made for kidney disease, they are less nauseating. So there is many things you can do. Again you give them small amounts of water. You give them less amounts of food and water at one time so they don't eat too quickly and they don't run too fast. Dehydration is important so you don't want them running around too much as well. With Pepcid and Famotidine and all this you give sometimes the BUN will go down or the Blood Urea Nitrogen so the dog will feel less nauseas in the latter stages of treatment because the treatment is working. If the treatment is working you can make your own home made diet and your veterinarian probably has recipes or you can get them on the Internet that has low protein, the biggest thing is low protein diets are very important in kidney function because the kidneys can't function clear it. So talk to your veterinarian of what recipes you can use and what products you can use to help the nausea in the dog."
