Hi I'm Dr. Bob Pane with South Kendall Animal Clinic. Let's talk a little bit about home treatment for urinary infection in dogs. In the past people have talked about cranberry juice in dogs and that has been questionable in researched over the last ten years that it really doesn't help very much. In humans it helps a lot because it makes your urine very hyperosmotic. Vitamin C helps a lot. If you increase the urinary acidification sometimes you'll get rid of the infections or help reduce the recurrence of infections but you have to be careful because some infections or some stones are formed by urinary infections caused by acidic urine. Most bladder infections and urinary tract infections are bacterial in nature so once you do, if your dog is showing signs of urinary infections is to check the vulva or the penis and make sure there is no debris or infection around that area because it may just be on the outside of the body on the external genitalia. So clean the vulva really well, wash it really well with good wash, soap and water very gently or the penis and make sure there is nothing there that may be infected that make him feel like he has got to go to the bathroom a lot. Again Vitamin C, I usually give 250 mgs., three times a day for an average 25 to 30 pound dog. Again cranberry juice is not what I recommend, maybe some holistic veterinarians recommend that. I don't feel that it helps that much. The scary part for me is you have got to find out what is causing it so if it is a lot of urinary dysfunction then I recommend bringing a urine sample to your veterinarian and making sure there is no upper urinary tract infection like a bladder or kidney problem. Again these can manifest with the same signs so it is hard even for a veterinarian to tell unless they do a urinary, a urine exam of the sediment and look for blood, look for protein, look for a PH that is high or low, look for urine that is concentrated. Anyway very few things I recommend to do at home if it becomes more chronic.
