Video Transcript

"Hi my name is Dr. Ana Lamas and I am a practicing allergist and immunologist in the Miami area. Let's talk about how to treat allergy-related coughing. Allergy-related coughing is a very common symptom. It can be due to a variety of pathologic parameters. First and foremost it is often a tickle in the back of the throat. The patient will note a tickle when they breath in and those patients will have most of their cough symptoms resolved with a histamine blocker. Sometimes patients will cough from allergies due to postnasal drip and those patients will have their cough relieved usually with an antihistamine as well as a nasal either corticosteroid or histamine blocker and lastly what is quite common and is often confused for something else is an allergic cough due to what is considered cough variant asthma. In that case the patient needs asthma medications because the cough is a manifestation of bronchospasm."
