"Hi my name is Dr. Ana Lamas and I'm a practicing allergist and immunologist in the Miami area. Let's talk about how to get rid of allergic hives. This is a very interesting topic because it's a rather common condition in the general public. Many people will at some point in their lives have an experience a quite terrible experience of having generalized hives or as we call them urticaria Hives are raised, they're the color of our skin but always a little bit on the pink side of our skin tone. They're very very itchy. They look a lot like mosquito bites and they're evanescent. They come and go lasting no more than eight hours in the same spot. The way to treat allergic hives is first and foremost with histamine blockers, large doses of good antihistamines. Often one can take antihistamines that are over-the-counter. The problem is sedation. The doses that we need to treat this often cause sedation and if that is not enough corticosteroids whether by mouth or injected are the next necessary treatment."
