Hi this is Dave Trull from the Trull Gallery a custom furniture shop in St. Petersburg, Florida, and we are going to talk to you today about how to remove a chuck from a hand drill. Drill chucks can be kind of tough to remove, there is a lot of torque on them. So you have got to have a little patience with them, and sometimes it doesn't hurt to call your manufacturer to find out exactly what is what. Most of the chucks on the market today will have some kind of fastener in the center. In this case there is an Allen screw down in the center, and we need to pull that out. So go ahead and remove that. The next thing that we need to do is just go ahead and un-thread the chuck from the body, which is easier said than done. In most cases you are going to need a large Allen wrench, and lock that down in your chuck the best you can. And I went ahead and called the manufacturer of my drill to find out is this a standard thread or a reversed thread. And they told me that this was in fact a standard thread so I want to go counterclockwise to remove it. And if you just turn it it is not going to do anything, because the chuck is on the thread nice and tight going into the body. So what you need to do is get a really nice quick, sharp strike to get that just right. Don't be upset if you find out that it is you are going the correct direction, but it is not budging. You may have to take two or three whacks. It took about three whacks to get this off yesterday. And then you can go ahead and loosen that, pull this out, and replace your chuck. And replacing it is just the opposite, thread it back on, return that screw to the center, and you are good to go. Real simple, real easy to do. That is how to remove a chuck from a hand drill. I am Dave Trull with the Trull Gallery, the fine art of furniture making.
