Hello, my name is Doctor Simion Tsinker. I'm with Plantation Maternity Center in Plantation, Florida. Let's talk about what causes the high blood pressure during the pregnancy. In pregnancy, the physiology of it is such that there is a dilatation of the blood vessels throughout the body which basically leads to a lowering of the blood pressure under normal circumstances. Therefore, elevation of blood pressure in pregnancy is very significant because it goes against what we expect to be taking place under normal circumstances. There are three conditions with elevated blood pressure during pregnancy. One is chronic hypertension, which is a hypertension the patient may exhibit before twenty weeks pregnancy, and also outside of pregnancy, and pregnancy-induced hypertension which is also called toxemia where there is a vase of spasm, spasm of the blood vessels. The condition is characterized by elevated blood pressure and protein in the urine.
