"Is your door hardware old and dated? Want to give your door a new, updated look? Here are the materials you will need to perform this at home: a Kwikset door knob kit found on kwikset.com, or any local hardware store or home improvement retailer, a Philip's head or flathead screw driver, a tape measure. The first thing you will want to do is select the style of door knob and finish you prefer for you door. Kwikset offers a variety of styles and finishes to suit your home decor. Now that you have selected your new style of hardware, it is time to remove the old door knob. To do this, you will either want to remove the screws holding the trim to the door, or simply pry the trim off the door with a flathead screw driver. Once the screws are removed, simply pull the door knobs apart, removing them from the door. Next, use the screwdriver to remove the old latch on the door as well as the existing strike plate on the jamb. New latches and strikes are provided with the Kwikset door hardware, and you will want to use them to match the finish of your new knob. Install the new latch by inserting it into the side of the door. Always make sure the slant of the latchbolt faces in the direction that the door closes. It maybe necessary to adjust your latchbolt depending on the width of your door. With the new latch installed, you're ready to install the new door knob assembly. Install the stems knob first by depressing the bolt and sliding the stems knob into the housing. For the non-stems knob, allowing the assembly with the spindle and screws, rotating the base until flush. Once the unit is flush, rotate the base clockwise slightly and tighten the screws with a screwdriver. Finally, with the knob installed on the door, install the new strike into the door jamb with the screws and tighten until flush. It is a good idea to test the action of the lock to make sure it's been installed correctly.
