Step 1
When replacing the bearings, ask a car parts supplier what the proper size is for the axel on your trailer. You will use two sets of bearings per wheel.
-
Step 2
Remove dust cover on outside of hub by inserting the blade of a screwdriver around the edge and twisting the screwdriver to pry off.
-
Step 3
Remove the cotter pin to loosen and unscrew the nut holding the wheel on. Pull out the outside bearing and pull off the hub. Slide off the inside bearing.
-
Step 4
Pack the new bearings with grease. Work the grease into all the spaces so there is no air left between the bearings in the race.
-
Step 5
Slide the inside bearing onto the axel. The bearings are a cone shape and the narrower parts of the bearing face each other (see diagram).
-
Step 6
Make sure there are no loose metal fragments rust or dirt inside the hub and clean out the old grease.
-
Step 7
Replace the hub so the cup, which is still inside the hub, seats the inside bearing. Replace the outside bearing so it seats within the outside cup.
-
Step 8
Tighten the large nut until the wheel doesn't wobble, but turns freely. Don't overtighten the nut.
-
Step 9
Replace the old cotter pin with a new one. The nut has slots around it and there is a hole through the axel that should line up to accept the cotter pin.
