"You need to be able to judge your intensity levels while you're out training. Many times, you may not have a heart rate monitor or a power meter while you're training, so to judge your intensity levels, use the talk test. For recovery riding, easy paced riding, you should be able to carry on a conversation without interruption. For moderate, endurance paced riding, you should be able to get one to two sentences out without having to take a breath. When you're going hard, or at lactate threshold, then two to three words, then you're going to have to take a breath. When you're going max, flat out, as hard as you can go, well, there's no talking at all, there's only breathing."
