Hi, my name is Lisa. I'm a Hairstylist in Wilmington, North Carolina and I'm here to talk about how to cut hair with thinning shears. Thinning shears are; they look a lot like scissors but they have a; they have notches cut in half of the cutting blade. So when you're actually cutting hair, you're taking out about half as much as you would with normal scissors. So in the case of our model tonight, we are going to take out a little bit from the ends in order to create a little bit of texture on the very ends of her hair. So we're going to cut about two inches from the end and then we're going to go through around the whole perimeter of her hair doing the same thing to create a, a little bit of, take out a little bit of weight through the bottom and create the texture that she wants tonight. The, the, the farther towards the scalp you go; depending on the texture of the hair, the more volume you're going to create. The thing you want to avoid when you're using thinning shears is getting too close to the scalp because what you'll create is a situation where you'll have hair sticking straight up from the scalp because it's too short. So you have to be very careful when you're using thinning shears to not go too short into the, the perimeter of the haircut and your best bet is to start closer towards the end to achieve the texture you're looking for before you start moving farther up the hair shaft. And that is how I would use thinning shears.
