Hi, this is Yolanda Vanveen, and we're going to talk about how to grow bamboo in shade. Now bamboo is, just like a grass, like an ornamental grass, the grass in your lawn. So to grow bamboo in the shade, it would be just like growing lawn in the shade. And there's a few tricks that you can do so that you'll be little more successful. Now first of all, you want to make sure and warm it up as much as you can. So if you have a shady spot, by removing some of the bottom branches and just getting a little bit more sun in there or just some more heat that helps a lot. And then you always want to add some good organic material; some compost, some potting soil to whatever is on the ground itself because if you put it right into pine needles, a lot of times the bamboo won't grow very well. Now you want to give it lots of water too. You want to make sure because it's not going to get a lot of rain down there and you've got to make sure that it get some heat if you don't have any light. So you have the outside light and around the house that is on at night in the shady area, sometimes that helps a lot too. Now bamboos still need some light; so if it's deep deep deep shades, you're going to have a hard time growing it. And remember if you have clumping bamboo you can put it right into the ground and it'll do really well 'cause it won't take over. If you have running bamboo it will really multiply; so keep it in containers. Don't put it in the ground. So by watering and cutting down a few branches and adding some artificial light to that area, a lot of times you can get bamboo to grow on the shade and it will be just beautiful.
