Hi I'm Stephen Smith, owner of Viva Fitness Personal Training located in Atlanta, Georgia. I work at Urban Body Fitness also located in Atlanta, Georgia. Today we're going to talk about developing muscle tone at 55. To develop muscle tone at 55 it's simple. You have to start slowly, understand what you're doing and work exercises starting with the larger muscle groups going down to the smaller muscle groups. Increase resistance gradually as you learn the exercise. When bench pressing do nice slow controlled movements. As you get stronger add weights. You can start by doing ten to fifteen reps as the weights get easier and easier gradually increase the weights five pounds increments each time and then go up to try to get eight to ten reps. The more gradual you are in your increase in weights the more you are going to build muscle tone. Starting off with heavy weights right away is not the direct answer especially at an older age. As you mature we lose muscle metabolism or muscle size gradually so you don't want to start out very heavy.
