Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen and in this segment I'm going to talk about how to prepare soil for grass. Now grass will grow whenever it's warm enough for it outside to grow and it has moisture so the best time to start a new lawn or even fill in is in the Spring or the Fall when it's not too hot or too cold and the nights still have some moisture. Now when you are preparing your soil there is a few rules that you can follow. Now my attitude with this is this is hard clay, so it is as hard as a rock and nothing is going to grow in it, it's just too hard. So whether you have sand or clay or mucky soil you want to work on top of what you already have so the easiest thing you can do is add some compost or potting soil to the top of it. Now a good type of soil has lots of compost, pine needles, grass clippings, any type of organic material, some maybe vermiculite, some rocks, maybe real small, just so that there is good drainage and you just want to mix that in and I don't really even mix into my soil. My attitude is work above because that grass will go in and then just grab on to what's underneath anyway and it only can grab on to the loose soil or the healthy soil. So then you want to just spread your grass seed in there and rake it in and then you want to mist it, you don't want to have too much pressure so you just add a real light misting of water until the grass is really growing well and then you can have a little more pressure and I have found the best time to water is in the heat of the evening when you are starting the new lawn unless it is really cool out but then I would always wait to start your lawn when it's at least 60 and above and before it gets too cold in the Winter at the same time and then you can enjoy a luscious beautiful lawn.
