Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen and in this segment we're going to talk about how to plant rye grass seed. Now rye grass is one of the heartiest grasses that you can use in your lawn and most of the varieties, the perennial varieties will come back year after year. Rye grass will do the best when you start it in the Spring or the Fall. You want the nights to be warm but not too hot and dry so there is lots of moisture in the air. Now the trick to growing rye grass is preparing the ground where you are going to plant it. Let me give you some tricks. So wherever you are planting your rye grass I like to try to work up the area a little bit first whether you have grass that is already dying or if you have got a new area that is just clay or you have moved a flower bed you just want to try to work it up and you want to physically remove as many weeds as you can. You don't want to use Round Up or any chemicals because that is not going to help anybody, it is just going to kill all the birds and the animals around you, it's not a good thing. So you don't need it, all you need is a lot of good potting soil or compost to cover it so even if I have a bed that is covered with weeds I just put some soil on top and some nice grass seed and it will come right up. So the best thing you can do when you add any type of grass seed is to add some nice potting soil or compost to the mix so that the seeds have something to grab on to. I always like to rake it out and then just sprinkle some grass seed over the whole area very thick and then just rake it in. Now you can do this over weeds or you can do it over sand or clay and just add some more grass seed. The best time is in the Spring or the Fall, mist it in real well with not too much pressure and the grass seed will come right up and you'll have a beautiful beautiful yard.
