Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen and in this segment we're going to talk about how to plant grass seed in sand. Now if you live at the beach or you live somewhere where there is sand everywhere then you know that you're not going to get grass to grow that easily right into the sand itself but if you look on the boarder near the ocean side where there is dead branches and leaves and anything collecting that is turning into compost grass will grow really well there. So sand is not a bad thing underneath some good soil so an easy way to grow grass in sand is just by adding some compost or potting soil above the sand and then putting some grass seed into that. It's really easy I'll show you. So in your area if it's sandy if there is weeds coming up you really have to manually pull up the weeds because if you put Round Up down, it is right through the sand, I don't like chemicals at all. It really is not going to address the issue. You've got to try to physically remove all the weeds and then just put a little bit of, this is a nice potting soil mix. It has got compost and sand, more sand and fir and grass clippings in it, all mixed together and then you just spread that on top of the sand and I like to do at least a couple inches deep because you want it not just to break down immediately and then just drop some grass seed in there and rake it in real well and water it with a mister, don't just spray it really hard because the grass seed is doing to wash right off but try to mist it until it gets really thick and wet and you will find within a few weeks you'll have nice lush soil on your sand. The best time to grow the grass is in the Spring or the Fall when it is still warm at night but the moisture is there, it's not too dry and it's not too hot. So no matter where you live, you can grow grass.
