Step 1
If you have an existing short jacket whose end hits right about at your natural waistline, you can add tails to make it a tailcoat. Or you can make one from scratch.
Cut 2 pieces of jacket material (base color material) and 2 of lining. -
Step 2
Match like fabric: lining to lining, base to base. Sew about an inch down the middle where the two piece meet (tack joint) to tack them in place.
-
Step 3
Pin and sew around all edges except for the top of the tails, you will need to turn them right-side out. Make a "V" when you get to the tack joint.
-
Step 4
Trim off excess material (if necessary), but still leave plenty of allowance. Notch corners and tack joint being careful not to cut through your stitches or too close to them. Turn right-side out with a blunt object to create sharp-looking corners. Press flat.
-
Step 5
Pin raw edge of tails to the raw edge of your jacket, right-sides together
-
Step 6
Finish (hem) with a serger or by folding raw edge over and zig-zag or running stitching with a normal machine.
