Step 1
The most common problem with any lighter is achieving spark, without any ignition. Usually, this is due to an empty fuel canister. If your lighter will spark, but not light, your first course of action should be to ensure it is full of fuel. Most lighters have a viewport through which you can check the butane level. However, there are a few lighters with which you will have to remove an outer sleeve to view the fuel reservoir. If your reservoir is full, check the gas jet to ensure it is not obstructed.

Step 2
To check for spark, simply take your lighter into a darkened room and strike it. If there is no telltale spark, then you have a problem. On lighters that use flints, replacing the flint is the most common solution. However, battery powered lighters will need a replacement battery inserted.

Step 3
Simply making sure that the gas jet (burner) is free of debris and obstructions can help improve your lighter performance. Use canned air to remove dirt and debris from the burner in this case.

Step 4
Bleed the reservoir to eliminate air and help improve performance. For instance, if possible, simply depress the fuel button enough to release some air, but not enough that the lighter sparks. If this doesn't work, adjust your flame height down. If this is too high, your lighter will not work well (because of too much pressure being released).
