How to Cook Perfectly Crisp, Flat, Bacon in Just FIVE Easy Minutes

Video Preview

Summary: Crispy, brown bacon enhances the flavor of so many dishes. You may crumble it over a fresh, garden salad, top a twice-baked potato, or blend it with cheese for a dip. It is the “B” in BLT. It gets top billing for the quintessential breakfast – Bacon ‘n’ Eggs. It seems such a bother to prepare, though. It is messy and greasy, both in the cooking and in the clean-up process. Here is the easiest, fastest, least messy way to achieve crispy, flat, bacon strips. Using a Panini Maker (Sandwich Press) with griddle plates minimizes the fat content, controls shrinkage, and eliminates uneven cooking. Several brands have interchangeable plates, such as Cuisinart or George Foreman. Thin-sliced bacon works best for this cooking style. Cut the slices to half-lengths: the bacon is easier to work with; and the slices will be just the right size for a homemade Egg McMuffin or a BLT.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Separate Bacon Strips
    Separate Bacon Strips

Let the bacon come to room temperature. The pieces separate more easily. If the bacon is cold, simply slip a knife between the strips and gently pry apart.

  2. Step 2
Replacing Grill Plates with Griddle Plates
Replacing Grill Plates with Griddle Plates

Replace the grill plates with the griddle plates. Place the drip catcher cup under the spout to collect run-off grease. Four full bacon slices (eight half-slices) will yield 1/4 cup of fat.

  3. Step 3
    Bacon Strips on the Griddle

Place the bacon strips close to, but not touching one another, on the COLD griddle. Close the lid.

  4. Step 4
    Control Settings

Set the dial to “Panini/Grill,” as you are heating both the top and bottom elements. Set the temperature to “Medium High.”

  5. Step 5
    Get These Ready

While the bacon is cooking, set out a tray, spatula or tongs, and a paper towel.

Lay the paper towel on the tray, or moisture will collect under the hot bacon on the tray. You want to keep the bacon dry and crisp. You may use a paper plate instead, if you wish.

  6. Step 6
    Almost Done

After approximately five minutes, the bacon will be ready.
(NOTE: Old bacon cooks exceedingly fast. It can burn. Check progress after two to three minutes, if this applies).

Carefully open the Press, as steam will escape. The slices should be light tan, with a hint of crust along the edges.

  7. Step 7
    Enjoy!
    Enjoy!

Using tongs or spatula, remove the bacon strips to the prepared tray or paper plate.

Your crispy, flat, bacon is ready to use.

on 11/18/2009 Nice video, great tips. Such a shame that you have not earned anything for your hard work. It just does not make sense some times as to why articles that are such well done as this do not earn money for the publishers efforts. If you figure out why let me know, please. Still wondering.......
