Instructions
  1. Step 1

There are several ways to cancel your magazine subscription. The easiest way is to do it is to go to the magazine's website. Most major magazines do have a public website, and will have a link for "CUSTOMER SERVICE", "SUBSCRIBER SERVICES", or something similar. This link will normally be located at the very bottom of the page. Click on this link, and on most sites, there will be a choice to CANCEL SUBSCRIPTION. Clicking on this will allow you to complete and submit a form to cancel your subscription online.

Some of the many magazines that allow you to do this are TIME, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, US MAGAZINE, and ROLLING STONE.

  2. Step 2

You can contact the Customer Service department by mail. For the contact address, look through the first few pages of the magazine to find a listing for this department. Some magazines list this information in the last few pages instead.

The contact information may be included in the magazine's masthead, the page where the Editors and Staff are listed, or printed along with other contact information at the bottom of a separate page.

Write a letter to the Customer Service Department at this address stating clearly that you want to cancel your subscription immediately upon their receipt of your letter. If you don't mind paying the extra postage, it is a good idea to send your letter by Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested, as they will have to sign for it and you will have a record that they did receive it.

  3. Step 3

Contact the Customer Service Department by email. Many magazines offer you the option of contacting them by email for subscription services. This can also be a quick way of cancelling your subscription. The magazine's email address can normally be found on their website or in the magazine's masthead.

  4. Step 4

Call the magazine's Customer Service or Subscription Department. You should be able to find this phone number on their website or in the magazine's masthead. When you call their number, always write down the name of the agent you speak with as well as any identifying employee number they may have for later reference if necessary.

If you get the runaround on the phone, if they try to hard sell you to renew your subscription, or if they want you to delay your cancellation, ask to speak to their supervisor immediately. Remind them that their job is Customer Service and you are best served at this time by having them cancel your subscription.

  5. Step 5

Once you make your intentions known and you cancel your subscription, you will probably still receive a few magazines for a while. It can often take six to eight weeks for a subscription to be terminated by the publisher.

When you receive magazines after you have given official notice to cancel, don't keep them. Write on the magazines, near the address area, "Refused - Cancel Subscription", and put them back in a mailbox for the United States Postal Service to return to the sender. This will further notify the publisher that you don't want their magazine. It will also cost the publisher money to get the cancellation information back from the Post Office, and that always gets their attention!
