Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    1. First, you need to find an open area that is safe. You need to make sure there are no streets or cars nearby.

  2. Step 2

    2. There are several places that may meet the requirements of a safe car-free zone. Travel to a local school yard. Many times there are softball or baseball fields that have a closed in gate. Or, you may be able to find an abandoned building or mill that has a lot of acreage. A local dog park may also have an "off the leash" area for you to exercise your dog.

  3. Step 3

/3. Before you let your pooch off the leash, you need to scout the grounds and close any gates. If you found a large open area with no gates, walk the dog around the area that is safe for your pet. This will help the dog adjust to the safe areas that are okay for your pet to play in. If there is a street nearby, be sure to steer clear of it especially when first introducing your pet to the new area.

  4. Step 4

    4. When you are ready to let your pet off the leash, make sure you are far away from the street. Let your dog off the leash. Then, travel farther away from the street. Keep talking and calling your dog to keep your dog close to you. If you suspect your pet may run away from you, bring treats and give the dog a treat every time he or she comes back to you.
