"Hi I'm Dr. Margaret Collins-Hill with Consults in Hypertension in Wilmington, North Carolina. The question this evening is how to check cholesterol and triglycerides at home. I'm afraid it's bad news. Cholesterol and triglycerides are best tested with a blood test that would be ordered by your doctor. In particular bad cholesterol or the LDL as well as triglycerides need to be tested after you've eaten nothing for ten to twelve hours. Eating greatly increases these values in your blood stream. Total cholesterol and the good cholesterol or HDL can be measured at any time. Generally you will report to your laboratory after your fasting period hopefully first thing in the morning. When you return to see your doctor he or she will review your results with you. Ideally a total cholesterol is less than 200, triglycerides are less than 150, LDL is less than 160, that's the bad cholesterol unless you have other conditions that cause for it to be lower. In some cases where folks have had heart attacks or strokes they may call for the LDL to be as low as 70. An HDL level over 60 is very protective against heart disease and something to be proud of, less than 40 it's of concern. So to recap if you want to get your cholesterol profile checked it's something you'll need your doctor's help for. You want to fast for ten to twelve hours prior to the test and then sit down with your doctor to help review the results."
