How to Teach a Baby to Say More in Sign Language

Video Preview

Summary: Teaching a baby sign language is a great way to start building a communication bridge. Giving a baby the tools to communicate before words emerge can help eliminate much of the frustrations between parent and child. Learning the sign for "more" can be a great first step. This is an easy sign for babies to imitate and gives both of you the confidence to learn more signs. A great signal that your baby is ready to learn american sign language is when he/she is watching your hand gestures and attempts to imitate (for example, clapping.)

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sit your baby down at a good time of day when she is awake and alert. A high chair is a great location, and you can do this during snack time.

  2. Step 2

Offer her a small bite of a yummy snack she enjoys.

  3. Step 3

Wait for her to look at you or the food, and look for cues that she wants another bite (for example, trying to grab at it.)

  4. Step 4

Say to your child, "you want more" and give the "more" sign, as demonstrated in the above video.

  5. Step 5

Wait a few seconds to give her a chance to imitate the sign. Most likely she will not right away, which is normal. Take her hands and gently assist her in making the sign, while saying, "more."

  6. Step 6

In a praising voice, tell your child, "okay, you want more!" and give her another bite.
