Hi, on behalf of Expert Village, this is Chris Murphy at the Broadway Comedy club in New York City. And today I'm going to talk about how to become a stand up comic.
Timing. Unfortuanately, usually this is something you are born with. Most people who are born that are very very funny, are born with incredible timing. Its like somebody who can fix something, I mean how the hell can he do that? I couldn't follow instructions, you know to fix something. Timing is something you are born with, but having said that, to make your self, here's a quick example of how you can mix a better comic with timing. When you're up there, listen to the crowd. When you are getting big big laughs, don't start the next joke while they are already laughing at the other one. Wait for them to calm down a bit, and then hit them again. Like for example, you are doing a bit that has five punchlines to it. You cannot do all five at once. They laugh hard, they come down, they're in a wig and sig, it's like jabbing. They're coming down, boom, hit them again. They're coming down, boom, hit them again. Also sometimes, timing is not saying anything. Let them regroup. So that its a natural progression on to the next topic. Instead of spitting all of your bullets out at the same time. Its a sense and feel, it's like an ocean, its coming and going. You will feel it up there. Its your own survival mechanism. You will know when the proper time is to tell the next joke.
