Hi, on behalf of Expert Village, this is Chris Murphy at the Broadway Comedy Club here in New York City, and today I'm going to talk about how to become a stand up comic. Alright now, what to write about. Many comics come to me and say "I don't know what to write about". All you have to do to get a lot of material about a certain topic is know why you want to write about it. Many comics make the mistake of trying to write a joke for the sake of writing a joke. No foundation. The crowd has to know why they're supposed to laugh. Are you angry? Are you frustrated? Are you happy? What is your point of view? You have to have a strong point of view to carry you through. Two or three things will happen. If you know why you're writing it, you will have a lot more material. "Hey I'm happy, okay I'm happy". So you're writing more. Also, now the crowd is going to know why they are supposed to laugh. Okay, if you have the feeling of happiness, "Oh yeah, I'm getting what he is feeling, oh yeah, okay." So that's the foundation. If you don't know why you're writing a topic, you have no foundation whatsoever. So this know why and how will come automatically.
