"Kayak safety begins before your trip, at home. Making sure that you have all the equipment. That you have your boat, your paddle and your life jacket. And your whistle and also some other safety equipment. Now before you go to your kayaking destination you do want to tell friends, family and let them know where you're going and what time that you're expected back. So if you run into problems when you're out there and you come back late or you're stuck out there they know where to search for you and start looking if need be. Now when you get to your destination you want to check out the conditions of the body of water that you're going to paddle. Now today we're in this nice lake setting. The water is calm. There's no rain or thunderstorms in the forecast and it's not really wavy. If it is wavy or thunderstorms, raining, then you might want to reconsider and come back and paddle another day. The water will still be here. Now when you get into your kayak, making sure that it's loaded with your first aid kit, your bilge pump, sponge, water, possibly a snack or a lunch for the day. The method I am showing to get into your boat today is the straddle method. And what you're going to do is you're going to straddle the boat. Your feet will get wet in this but you will get wet anyway when you're paddling a little bit. Straddle the boat, place the paddle down, and I'm just going to kind of have a seat, legs out, and right on in. Now I'm just going to slowing back on up. Now I'm ready to start my trip."
