"Hi I'm Richard Petty and I am a photographer in St. Louis and this is photographic composition basics. One of the things that you can do is search on the Internet and look at really good photography and try to understand what it is that makes a picture appealing to you. Pictures that are, where everything is just centered on them are really not considered to be good composition. Good composition takes advantage of trying to bring your eye to the center of the picture. If you're taking a picture of a person, you want to focus on their eyes and you want to bring the attention to their eyes and you can have, you can have things that will direct their attention to their eyes. Like for instance you see pictures where photographers have a hand up like this and that way the, your eye tends to go up the arm towards the subject's eyes. The other thing that I recommend is going to the art museum, look at the classical portraiture in the art museum and look at those pictures, rarely do you ever see anyone in those pictures that's sitting dead center in the frame of the picture. They're always kind of a little bit off to the side and there's always something else in the picture that draws your eye toward their face. Go look at that and you'll get a lot of great ideas from that. And that's probably the best thing I can tell you about composition in photography, basic composition."
