"Hello. My name is Susan Summons and I'm a college basketball coach here at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus. Lets talk about what basketball scouts do. You have a variety of basketball scout categories. You could be a scout. This could be you if you're listening. You could be a scout at the NBA level. You could be a scout at the college level. You could be a scout at the high school level. You could be an AAU scout. You can be a youth league scout. But as a scout your job and your role is to go out, travel on the road. Make sure you take a clipboard. A pencil and paper. Even a notepad if you don't have a clipboard. And you're going to be writing down a lot of information. What are you writing down as a scout? Well you're looking at players. Players that might fit into your program. Players that you're evaluating that you might be considering if you're an NBA scout that you're considering drafting. Players, if you're a college scout, that you're considering recruiting to come to your university. If you're a high school scout, players that you're interested in evaluating and maybe this is a player or a group of players that you've got to play against. So you've got to go out and scout that team to make sure you prepare your team for the competition. If you're an AAU scout or a youth league scout, again, you're reviewing talent in other players so that you can better prepare your team for competition. So if you want to be a great basketball scout make sure you're willing to work hard, you don't mind traveling because it may involve a lot of traveling. You need to make sure you have a clipboard, a notepad, something to write with, take notes. And scouts are looking for all kinds of skills. They're looking for shooting skills, rebounding skills, work ethic. They're looking at interactions. How that player interacts on the floor with other players. They're looking at statistics. They may walk into a gym, folks, and they may ask the game management table to give them copies of a stat sheet because they may be interested in seeing how many rebounds that player received. Rebounding really shows and is a reflection of hard work. And that folks gives you some tips on how to become a great basketball scout."
