"Hi friends! I'm Mark Govan with ABC Pest Control in Largo, Florida and today's question is, will cold weather kill fleas? Well, if you're leaving up north where temperatures drop below freezing, yes, that will kill a lot of the fleas outside the home but not inside the home but in the south where we are, cold weather to us means about 75, maybe even 65 degrees and of course that type of weather will do nothing to control the fleas either inside the house or outside the house. Now, remember, fleas go through a complete metamorphosis, that means they start as an egg, they go into a larvae which feeds on the egg, the feces from the adult fleas then it goes into a pupal stage. Now, as the key that pupal stage, fleas can live in a long time. Some studies are showing that these pupal stages can remain dormant for over a year so if the flea happens to be in the larval stage or in the pupal stage outside the home and even if we do get cold weather, the cold will not affect them whatsoever, they can lay dormant in there until the temperature has rise long enough to go ahead and hatch out and get it, you know, get back on you or your pet. Now, inside the home, remember our temperatures never get down below freezing inside so we're not going to eliminate any of the fleas that are inside the house so cold weather will never have an effect in them. With them it's a better idea to go in and use a good insecticide either inside the home to kill not only the flea eggs but the flea adults as well. Remember, fleas can lay a lot of eggs up to fifty eggs a day, an average female flea can go ahead and lay so that means you're going to have a lot of fleas in the home. What kind of products can you use to go ahead to kill those fleas? Well, we've got a couple products here, one is called Precor 2000 Plus. Now, Precor is a great product to go ahead and kill your fleas inside the home but outside the home, you may want to try something else, a product like TotalStar with the active ingredient by Fentrem will work very well to keep the flea populations down outside the house but the very first question again, about cold weather remember, if you're in the south, the cold's not going to affect them, up north when we get below freezing, that will go ahead and kill most of those flea populations. I'm Mark Govan with ABC Pest Control in Largo, Florida helping you having pest-free day."
