"Hi, this is Carlos Navarro, I'm an artist here in Miami, Florida. In this clip I'm showing oil painting tips for beginners. As you can see, I've got two canvasses here, the first one is been primed, but nothing is on it. My suggestion is, you don't ever leave a canvas white, you put a ground on it. What's a ground? A ground is a color that you like, a ground is a color that for the most part, your painting has a lot of that color. I like brown because I like darker paintings, and for me, brown is a pretty solid color that you can use for people. There's always some kind of brown in a person, in their face and so on, so for portraits it's perfect. What I like to do is, I like to cover the entire canvas with a brown color, and I like to pick my brushes that are for the most part, this length. I don't like longer brushes and I like to draw on, from a plate. If I draw from a palate, what happens is, if I mix a color and it happens to be a brown tone, the palate's color is also brown. You can get a white palate, but I just feel comfortable drawing from a plate, it's just me, it's easier. What I want to wind up doing is, when I paint, I don't want to paint like this, this is the worst thing you can do. This is not a house, you're not painting a house. You want to get the brush like this, and you want to paint, as if you were drawing. Let's see what I come up with here, I'm not really sure what I'm going to come up with. But let's suppose I've got something here. And I want to make sure that I draw my outlines, pretend I'm doing a drawing, instead, I've done a parasol, and I've done somebody at the beach with a nice blanket. Make sure you hold your brush like this, whatever you choose do, it's almost always on a line. This has been Carlos Navarro, thanks for watching."
