"Hi I'm PGA member Jay Golden and this is a beginners guide to golf clubs. The most important thing to know about golf clubs in terms of using one that is right for you is the correct flex in the shaft. And you'll have to ask someone when you purchase clubs but in general, if you swing extremely hard and hit long, you would want a stiffer shaft. If you swing medium, a medium shaft. If you swing easy, a wimpier shaft because the shaft should bend and help you a little. You don't want it so stiff that it doesn't help you at all and you don't want it so wimpy that when you're here the club is bent back here. So that's the most important thing in terms of selecting clubs is the wimpiness or stiffness of the shaft. In terms of clubs, every club has a different angle at the bottom. A 9 iron will have a certain angle and then 8, 7, 6, 5, a driver, the least angle. You might wonder well why? Why do you have clubs with different angles? And the reason is so that you could learn one golf swing and hit the ball different distances. For example if you are a 150 yards away and that's your 5 iron. If you're 120 yards away instead of taking a 5 iron and hitting it easy, you can take that same swing with let's say an 8 iron and hit it 120 yards. With a 3 iron maybe 180 yards. But that's the reason why you want to have different numbers, different lofts on your club. So you can learn one swing and hit the ball different distances. And how do you know how far you are from the green? Usually there are plates on the course that say 150 from the green or 100 or 200, some courses will be more specific with yardages but the reason you want different clubs is so you can learn one swing and learn the distances that you hit each club and you will play your best golf."
