Summary: For better iron control in golf, try using a club that may seem like it will travel too far, as most balls are hit too short. Create backspin with an iron by taking a divot in golf with help from a member of the PGA National Teaching Committee in this free video on iron shots and control.

"Hi I'm PGA member Jay Golden and here are a few tips on how to get better control with your irons. Number one, if you think about the iron shots that you hit in an 18 hole round of golf it the last week, in the last month, in the last 10 years, how many of those shots have been over the green and how many of those shots have been short of the green? Many, many more have been short of the green as opposed to over the green. That's why my number one tip is if in double, use one more club. For example instead of using an 8 iron, use a 7 iron. Not only will that give you a better chance of hitting to the middle of the green and beyond but it might even give you the opportunity to swing a little easier and if you swing easier there certainly is more control in your shots. Take one more club, see what happens. The second tip, with irons you want to take a divot after you hit the ball, very important. It gives you a better chance for solid contact and it also gives you backspin. Hit down, you always see divots, when you watch TV, when you watch those pros and you see a divot, you see grass going after they hit the ball, remember it's after they hit the ball, it's not before they hit the ball. Take a divot and that will give you more backspin, more control and better iron shots. And finally ball position is extremely important if you want to take a divot. That's why I recommend taking a few practice swings to find out where the bottom of your swing is and when you find out where the bottom of your swing is, where you address the ball, put the ball slightly behind where you hit the ground because when you hit the ground, that's the divot. Put your ball slightly behind where you hit the ground and that will help you make solid contact. Take one more club, take a divot and find out where your swing bottoms out and you will hit better iron shots."
