"Hello. I'm Dr. Brad Cohen an orthopedic surgeon with Aventura Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine here in Aventura, Florida. Lets talk a little bit about recovering from partial knee replacement surgery. A partial knee replacement surgery where one of the three compartments of the knee is replaced, including the medial, lateral or patella femoral compartments typically may have a shorter recovery period than a standard total knee arthroplasty. The partial surgery can be performed through smaller incisions and may not have to cut through as many structures and therefore some patients have faster rehab and improved function after this type of surgery. Rehabilitation will usually begin in the hospital immediately after the surgery and then continue on an outpatient basis at a rehab center. The surgery rehabilitation will focus on strengthening range of motion and ambulation. Eventually patients can return to sports and other type of activities. The partial knee replacement surgeries can have a shorter recovery period than the standard surgery."
