"Hello. I'm Dr. Brad Cohen an orthopedic surgeon with Aventura Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine here in Aventura, Florida. Lets talk a little bit about new procedures in knee replacement surgery. The standard knee replacement surgery has been around for many years. And some newer types of surgeries have recently become available. Uni-compartmental knee replacement surgeries replace one component of the knee instead of all three compartments including the medial, lateral and patella, femoral compartments. Other types of new procedures are minimally invasive surgery where the surgery is performed through a smaller than standard incision. Finally, computer assisted knee replacement surgery can perform the surgery with a computer that helps guide the surgeon to make cuts to improve the outcome of the surgery. Some of these new procedures offer the possible benefit of improved outcomes, decreased rehabilitation time or inpatient time and less post operative pain. Some of the new procedures may have less cost than the standard procedure and less inpatient hospitalization which can also result in a reduction of cost. You need to talk to your surgeon to find out which is the best procedure for you."
