"Hi! I'm Dave Zarco with USA Badminton and I'm here at Shula's Athletic Club in Miami Lakes, Florida. Let's talk about the scoring system for badminton. Actually, there are two scoring systems that are that are in play these days. The original scoring system was played to fifteen, best two out of three games and you could only score points on your serve. These days the one badminton federation has adopted the rally scoring system where now it's best two out of three games and it is played to twenty-one and you must win by two points and with the rally system, whoever wins the rally gets the point. Now, however, when you get to twenty and it is tied at twenty all then you have to play then you have to keep playing to win by two but when it gets to twenty-nine all then it's sudden death, it's what they call sudden death and that means the next person who scores wins the game so it ends no matter what at thirty. So, you can win by one at thirty but normally if you get to twenty-one and you are ahead of your opponent by more than two points by two or more points then you win the game and that's how the scoring is. Now, when you score, in order to score or to start a rally, you have to serve underhand, the serve must be underhand and both server and receiver cannot move their feet until the shuttle has been struck by the server. Now, with the rally scoring system, all five events, men's and, men and women singles and doubles along with mixed doubles. They all played a twenty-one. With the old scoring system, every event except for women's singles was played to fifteen, with the women's singles to eleven. So, that's the one, big difference between the rally and the original scoring system."
