"Hi, I'm Joe Harpole. I handle hardwood for ProCare, here in Nashville. Today my subject is going to be taking care of hardwood floors. The most simple thing to do is remember what Mom told you. Keep the sharp stuff off the floor so you don't trip on it, scratch the floors, mess up the floor, and hurt yourself. Beyond that, there's some tools that you want to use just to keep your floor in good shape. One of the basic tools is the vacuum cleaner. You want to keep dust off the floor as much as you can, but when you find it, you want it clean it up. Any time you work on a hardwood floor, as much as possible, you want to go with the grain of floor, so when you vacuum, just go back and forth across the floor like this, move it aside a little bit, come right on back. As little as possible, go against the grain. You don't want to go against the grain, but go with the grain of the floor. The other tool that I recommend for maintenance of your hardwood floor surface is simply a mop like this with a hardwood floor cleaner. These kits are available at hardwood floor stores and at the big box stores. The simple maintenance is just to spray some on the floor, wipe it up, and move to the next part of the floor. Do this fairly often; as often as you see the need."
