"Hi, my name is Lynn Bestul. I'm the Solid Waste Planner for New Hanover County in North Carolina. Today, I'm here to talk to you about how to recycle plastic. Plastic that you have in your house -- one of the easiest things, and if you're one of those lucky people, you're able to put that plastic and the plastic bottles into a container, take it out to the curb, and somebody comes by magically and takes it away. In a lot of places, they don't have that benefit. So you have to be a little proactive. Sort those plastic materials out -- all of your recyclables, actually -- but primarily your plastics. Keep those in one container. If your county provides a drop-off site or there may be an actual recycling facility -- a material recovery facility -- in your area that you could take those plastics to. Normally, the facilities do not charge you to dump that plastic at all. This is a savings that you're reducing some of the expenses at your house. That stuff that you're not having to buy additional garbage bags to put into your garbage can at home. So you take those plastics and just get them recycled at one of the facilities. You're keeping it out of the landfill, and that's another major benefit. Landfills are very expensive. Once the plastics get to those facilities, they will sort them by numbers and they'll bale they up and they'll ship them off to actual markets where the material...the plastics will be re-manufactured into probably those same bottles that you've brought in. So what...I'm just recommending: Be as proactive as you can with recycling bottles, and those are the facts I've got about recycling plastic."
